4 Animals that We Can No Longer See

Just like humans who die each day, animals also face the end of their lives too. Some were unfortunate enough that we can never witness their kind of breed ever again. Being vulnerable to climate changes and hunting, these four animals slowly disappear from our world till the point of no return.

1. Northern White Rhinoceros

Hunted for their horns to use in traditional Chinese medicine, the Northern White Rhino’s population became rapidly declined easily in Africa. It was also proven by National Geographic articles that there are no medical benefits of rhinoceros horns in humans; however, it was too late for that. It was declared on this species is functionally extinct ever since 2018 when the last male northern white rhino passed away. With only two females of Northern White Rhinoceros left at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy who are too old to reproduce, we can no longer have a pure linage of their species.

Scientists are trying to save the leftover remnant of the species by using the two females’ eggs for the project and sperm from two different deceased males but failed. They are continuously putting effort to ensure that we, humans, can at least see a little bit remaining traits of Northern White Rhinoceros in the future by using the latest cutting-edge technology and research.

2. Spix’s Macaw

Driven to the disappearance of their species by human factors like dams’ construction and deforestation, a recently extinct animal that was declared in 2000 was called the “Spix’s Macaw”. You might remember the animated movie called “Rio” which depicted a cartoon characterization of the breed. With its vibrant blue feathers and beauty, it was the national pride of Brazil that used to fly around near the Rio Sao Francisco in Bahia. The extinction part is there is no longer more wild Spix’s Macaw because the ones that are called “came back from extinction” are bred in captivity by ACTP and its partners.

3. Splendid Poision Frog

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared in 2020 that the splendid poison frog was extinct. Commonly known by the locals as the Rana Venenosa and Sapito Venenosa (in Spanish), this species was found to be living in the neotropical forests of Panama in the mountain ranges next to Costa Rica. The two main factors that led to its extinction were the narrow distribution and continuing decline in the extent, and the quality of its habitat.

4. Smooth Handfish

Last seen in 1802 despite the extensive searches from divers and scientists, the Smooth Handfish has not been found and was declared in modern times that it is officially “extinct”. It was unpleasant to witness that even the seafloor is not safe from extinction as human activities continue to affect the wildlife and ecosystem. The Head of Oceans at the environmental pressure group, Will McCallum stated that the world’s governments need to commit to legally binding national biodiversity objectives because sooner, other types of fish may never be seen again.
